Lecture content: Instant translation tools and AI-assisted communication are evolving at breathtaking speed. Today you can speak or write in your own language and have your message translated instantly into someone else’s. As technology becomes more capable, it is tempting to ask: If machines can do all the work, why should anyone still learn a foreign language?
Learning a new language is a long, and often painful journey, filled with failures, disappointments, insecurities and embarrassment. And yet, despite these challenges, language learning remains deeply valuable. This presentation explores why. The lecture will cover:
- Positive effects of language learning on brain function and memory
- Social and cultural benefits, including connecting with people across languages
- Finding personal meaning and life purpose through language learning
